The Art of Space

I studied the work of Simon Hantaï and his artistic process for a studio assignment in which artist work would inspire architectural designs. We were assigned the task of designing a gallery space for each artist.

This is a presentation board from one of several design charrettes, or short collaborative meetings, that took place throughout the course of the semester. Part of this assignment was to dissect an image of the artwork and create a color story based on every color within the assigned painting.

Then, I created an original textile design directly inspired by Hantaï’s work, “Étude.”

Find below the presentation board for this segment which described both the conceptual and iterative design process.

And finally, I designed and built a model of the gallery to scale, with curated art installations to house an exhibit of Hantaï’s work, “papier plié.” From art to architecture, this was an elaborate + iterative process which required over 150 hours in studio.
